I picked up a cheap headphone amp (FiiO E06, specifically), which let me turn the PC volume back up to a normal range, and also provided me physical volume controls, instead of the media keys.
It meant that I had no range for adjusting the volume level - turning the volume up a notch would be a significant jump in volume, and I also ran into a fair bit of interference-type noise at that low a volume level. The output amp on the ENVY headphone jack tends to overdrive the headphones, which means that I had to set the volume control as low as it would go to not deafen myself. I mean, the motherboard makes a huge deal out of their onboard sound hardware, but I can barely use it as is. Most experienced users considered to substitute stock DirectSound plugin for a ones like WASAPI, ASIO, OpenAL. There is a LOT of Microsoft code involved which could be easily bypassed by something based on native Vista standards (read less MS code), like WASAPI. Nullsoft's DirectSound is ok for WinXP but rendered legacy on Vista. This gives the third parties a lot of space for maneuvering in precision, better software role targetting, and general optimization. Usually the windows tools are bit too much general and "commercial". It gives more flexibility and power to the developer and can probably bypass the problems of those upper level. WASAPI plugins works at lower lever bypassing most upper level utility functions the system providing. No, i had no plans to sell my work, really.
